Justin's Story....more words can go here...

Justin is 14 years old, born in Maasailand, Tanzania. In 2010 he fell into a cooking fire where he lay for several minutes. His face was all but burned away. His life hung in the balance for many months and he would have died had it not been for the care and attention of a few people who knew he had the strength to live. Now, a long term and very popular member of The Plaster House, Justin has come a long way. Read more about his story...

By Cath Swanson,  a British nurse working in Tanzania since 1999

"I came across Justin in July 2010 whilst visiting on the paediatric ward of the regional hospital. He had been burned two months previously. He had had a seizure and fallen into a cooking fire face first and had not been discovered for several minutes.  His initial injuries were so severe it was thought he wouldn’t live through the night, but the next morning his parents brought him to Morogoro regional hospital where he lay under a blanket, with no treatment whatsoever except the amputation of his right arm. The delay in any treatment was unfortunate but following transfer to Muhimbli for 6 months of grafting and then a year in CCBRT community hospital in Dar, his face was patched up enough to be able to go home, where he has been since December 2011.

He is now 12 years old, a bright and brave little boy but extremely self conscious as he has no nose, extensive scarring and rather crude grafting to his lips. This has prevented his return to school. The hospitals in Dar have said that fashioning nose would be impossible because he does not have enough cartilage to graft from. His family are extremely poor, live three hours walk from the nearest village but love him very much and are motivated to access any help that is available - October 2012
